Phi Phi Islands Highlights
PHI PHI LEH ISLAND
Maya Bay, on the west coast of Phi Phi Leh island, is undoubtedly the most famous of the sights to see in this part of the world, being the location where much of The Beach was shot. If you haven’t seen the film starring Leonardo DiCaprio that was based on the cult classic by Alex Garland, you’re in for a treat. Loh Sama (Sama Bay), separated from Maya Bay by a tall limestone cliff, can be reached at low tide through a short tunnel in the cliff and is another great snorkelling and scuba diving site. Pi Leh Bay, on the eastern side of the island, is a gorgeous lagoon surrounded by towering limestone cliffs. Snorkelling in its crystal clear, emerald-green waters offers the opportunity to see beautiful tropical marine species such as the colourful parrot fish, in their natural environment.
On the northern end of Phi Phi Leh is Viking Cave, which is a natural cave in the base of a limestone cliff. If you wonder what the precarious-looking bamboo scaffolding is for when you visit Viking Cave, it’s used to reach the birds’ nests that are harvested by locals here, for use in Chinese medicine. For anybody who is planning a private boat Phi Phi Island tour, Phi Phi Leh is a must visit destination.
PHI PHI DON ISLAND
For a change of pace, a visit to Monkey Beach on the southwest side of Tonsai Bay (on the main island of Phi Phi Don) is an excellent choice. Taking its name from the long-tailed macaques that live in the limestone cliffs forming a dramatic backdrop to the strip of pristine coral sand, Monkey Beach is popular with visitors from across the world. It’s also another fantastic snorkelling location, with many stunning tropical marine species making their home in the warm, clear waters.
BAMBOO ISLAND
About 2.7 nautical miles (5 kilometres) north of Phi Phi Don is Bamboo Island. If you’re taking a private boat to Phi Phi island from Phuket, this tiny, heart-shaped island should not be missed. Consisting of a strip of white coral sand surrounding a central area populated by bamboo and casuarinas trees, Bamboo Island is circled by a coral reef, making it yet another great location in this area for snorkelling and scuba diving.
